Berkano is the rune of the “Great Mother”. In the cosmos berkano is the mother of all manifestation. Berkano also embodies the concept of the earth as “Great Mother”. Berkano is the rune of human rites of passage at pivotal points in a person’s life. Usually rites of passage happen at birth, adolescence, marriage and death. Berkano is the rune for the goddess Nerthus the Birch goddess. The Birch tree is also her symbol. Nerthus or the berkano rune is for birth, life, death and rebirth. Because berkano is a rune of death, she is also known as “terrible mother”. As “terrible mother” she rides her chariot in Hel. Hel in the Norse religion is a cold place of ice and snow much like the Hoth planet in Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Episode V.
Berkano gives peace and fertility. Berkano represents the life-death-rebirth cycles in nature. The tale of Nerthus taking a human sacrifice is not literal in the sense that the Norsemen actually partook in human sacrifices. It is a symbolic tale of the story of how people live and are born while others die. This is a poetic lesson much like the Chinese “Better cut a finger to save a hand” thing. Some cultures used shocking examples to express a truth. This life cycle also embodies the mysteries of the moment. The idea of a unit of evolution is embodied in this rune. This embodies the idea of how the big picture of evolution over millions of years show a systematic plan combined with the small picture of the struggle for survival in an individual organism’s life. The individual survival embodies some aspects of chance.
Berkano is a passive receptor and the conserving protective force. The Womb aspect is embodied in this rune. Berkano conceals and protects and as such is a rune of secrecy. Berkano rules over all protective or concealing enclosures. Caves, lodges or any initiatory earth houses are represented in the Berkano rune. Berkano controls the forces of nature. Nerthus is similar to Isis in the Egyptian religion.
