This has nothing to do with spell check. It was a correctly spelled word, just, if I am not mistaken, the wrong word for the circumstances.

Fallow is the new follow. For this i have decided. Besides if you go off the sounds it should be A instead of O. Just like the word OF should be spelled OV. And please should be pleaze. In fact most of the words we use are spelled wrong in my opinion. To many extra letter's and silent sounds. Or one letter sounding like another. Not to mention one word has thirty different meanings. While others sound the exact same but have different spelling. And the content of a word is change by the context in which it is used. This doesn't take into account the fact that we all have different dictionary's in our head. Based off of culture and our personal experience. Trust me if you meditate on words and language long enough it will drive you mad.

The reason the English language has so many different spellings and letters that seem extra is the bases of that language. The modern English language as spoken in America is based on English from England. That is where we get the "ough" type stuff. We get some of our language from German but far less. We even have some Latin in the mix. That is just a little bit of our language history. I am no expert since I misspell a lot and I am very grateful that I have spell check. This feature I did not have with my old computer and every thing I wrote had misspellings. Now I have less misspellings. Sometimes I still miss it in case of words like minnor(to mine as in coal) or Minor (a young child).

Sorry, Mrs. Darth Vader, but you're thinking of "miner", as in someone who mines coal. :-P
The reason why there are so many irregular spellings in English is that there was a time when there were many alternate spellings for words, and people could choose what spellings they wanted to use. Preferred spellings also varied by where the people were. Dictionaries started coming around and spelling was beginning to be set and standardized at a time when the English language was going through a big change, leaving us with a language that is full of irregularities and odd spellings. Add that to the fact that some words used to be pronounced differently, and while the pronunciation changed, the spelling didn't, and you're left with English's curiosities.
