After the Fool which was card 0, comes the Magician. This is card #1 of the Major Arcana. It follows sequentially after the Fool as far as its theme. The Fool is the dreamer. The Magician takes these dreams and makes them happen for real. The Magician has the knowhow. The Fool does not. The Magician can use the Force to get a physical result.
The traditional Tarot shows a figure with a table in front of him. On the table are objects representing the Four Elements (the same objects as in the four suits of the Tarot's Minor Arcana). Some decks identify the Magician with Hermes or Mercury who was considered the mythic founder of Alchemy and the possessor of the Philopspher's Stone. This is because Hermes was considered the ultimate Magician. Some say he originated in Egypt, and it was he who instructed the young Moses in Egyptian Mysteries and magic. It reminds me of the Darth Plaguis/Palpatine connection. Behind every great Sith Lord is his/her master who taught them.
This Magician archetype uses all sides of the Force. The symbolism on the card shows how he draws from both Dark and Light. It is the manipulation of opposites that give this Magician power to make things happen. The emphasis of this card is power, power to make your dreams come true. Some decks show him with one hand pointing towards Heaven and the other hand pointing towards earth. This means he can bring the energies of Heaven (the Force) down to earth.
So what would this mean in a reading? It may mean the spark of an idea that may lead to an invention. Perhaps it is the moment when Einstein came up with his formulas or the moment when a writer gets the idea for a great book. Perhaps it was the moment when Luke first used the Force to move objects. Perhaps it was when a younger Palpatine made his first critical moves to get into a position. One of the powers of a magician is convincing speech. Palpatine was a master at that indeed. This card can represent a variety of powers.
What would its negative meaning be? Perhaps you are failing to make it happen, or perhaps you are the sucker of someone else's manipulation. You could be on the wrong end. Your intuition will tell you.
Its overall meaning can be summed up in the phrase we all know: "Use the Force!"
