The Empress is the feminine side of God/the Force. The Emperor is the masculine side. These two go together.
The Empress is "Mother Nature." Through her things are born and grow. In the traditional tarot, she is shown as a mother, a pregnant woman with a 12 pointed crown in some decks. In a way, she is the warmer side of the Priestess. The Empress is more concerned with nurturing things on earth, whereas the Priestess is more distant from the world.
The Star Wars movies do not have a clear Empress archetype. The closest in personality would be Shmi Skywalker. Qui-Gon's tendency to be a guardian of pathetic life forms fits the Empress archetype except that he is a male character in the movie. There has been a lack of development of female Jedi characters. Lord of the Rings is more clear with this archetype (Galadrial and Arwen). In mythology, the Empress would fit the gentle goddess figures, goddesses of beauty, love, seduction and fertility. The Empress follows her loves, feelings, and passions. She cries over the loss of a "child."
Yet, she is not all sweetness and gentleness. She can lash out and be a killer, an angry Mother Nature who stirs up hurricanes. She can be vengeful on those who attack her children or those she loves.
She would be easy to imagine as the wife of the Emperor. If there were gardens on the Death Star, it would be her doing. It would be her that influences the Emperor toward mercy toward some planet or person. The Emperor would need her to balance things in the Galactic Empire, to balance severity with mercy. This would cause things to flourish and grow. On the other hand, every good gardener tears out the weeds. She would also influence the Emperor to wipe out those that cause blight in the empire, like polluters and parasites. The planets that were destroyed beyond hope environmentally would be on the list to be destroyed, blasted into oblivion by the Death Star. The Empress would influence the Emperor to eradicate ruined species. She would plant the seeds of regeneration and renewal.
What if one gets this card in a reading? It may be a reference to a creative endeavor, a "child" (project) that is nurtured in order to grow. Perhaps one needs to be motherly. It may be a reminder to nurture some thing or someone. It could be asking, "What do you love?" Do you need to attend to that? (It is Valentine's Day as of this writing, did you remember that special someone?)
The negative interpretation of this card could be about smotheringness and possessiveness. This is the negative mother. Could it be saying that someone is this way toward you, or that you are this way toward someone else?
For a Sith to get this card, it could be saying to remember to balance harshness and severity with mercy and gentleness. It is a mistake to assume that being a Sith is devoid of mercy and gentleness. Palpatine did not get where he did solely on severity. There are times when a softer side came out, especially when dealing with Anakin. He had this side of himself which was the Empress of the tarot.
For a Jedi to get this card, it may be saying to be more like Qui-Gon Jinn when he rescued Jar Jar, to tap into the nurturing side of the living Force.
