Laguz is the primordial soup of life. It is the waters of Niflheimr that contain the potential for life. This liquid needs to be solidified (symbolized by ice) and energized by fire (lightening) before this life can be actualized. The concept of laguz is given in the “Cosmos” series when various gasses of our early earth atmosphere, like methane and others, are zapped with electricity until a liquid forms making the building blocks of life. This chemical reaction over millions of years is how the first plants came to be. The plants in turn created oxygen essential to all life. So laguz is essential in the most fundamental way. Embodied in laguz is the laws of evolution. (Insert Cosmos segments)
Laguz is a powerful rune of initiation. On naming day, the child was sprinkled with water because the child lived long enough to prove that a soul entered it’s body to inhabit it. Sprinkling was used in the Norse religion long before Christianity used this method. The Uruz (U-rune) and the laguz (L-rune) are closely inter related on different levels. Laguz is also the watery rite of passage at the end of life. This is similar to the tale of crossing the river Styx into the realm of the dead. Here Odin with his black hooded robe is the ferryman. The ship burials where the dead body was layed down in a small boat and pushed out to sea is an indicator of this belief. Laguz is the symbol of organic growth, phallic power and fertility in the physical as well as the spiritual realms. Laguz is also powerful herbal magic.
Magical Workings
1, Guidance through difficult initiatory tests.
2, Increase in vitality and life force.
3, Gathering of amorphous magical power for structuring by the will.
4, Increase in magnetism.
5, Development of second sight.
