Tiwaz is the rune of law and justice. This rune is associated with the god tyr. Tyr governs at Germanic general assembly. The god tyr would be the closest thing to a judge in a court room. There is a myth about Tyr sacrificing his hand (meaning active abilities) to the jaws of the wolf in order to save the lives of the gods in the Aesir. Because of this tale, Tiwaz is the rune of self sacrifice and of kings and great leaders of the people. These kings and leaders are people who have proven themselves. Titles and respect in the ancient German culture were earned not born into. The tiwaz rune has a three fold aspect to it of justice, war and world column. Tiwaz is judgment by arms. The Norsemen saw the out come of a battle as a spiritual judicial action. War was seen as a struggle between divine and demonic forces in conjunction with physical ones.
It was believed those who did the right actions leading up to the battle plus divine intervention by the god Tyr would determine the out come of the war. This is why tiwaz is also considered a rune of victory. The world column aspect of tiwaz maintains world order and protects man and the gods from the destruction that would come should the heavens (energy) and earth (matter) collapse into one another. This symbolism is very interesting . This is how the ancient Norseman described the oscillating universe. Coincidently this description is very close to two things in the world of physics. This can easily be a description of how a black hole is formed and every thing collapses into a singularity. Another physics thing is also possibly described and that is how the universe will end. This fit’s the description of the “Big Crunch” as explained by Stephen Hawking. Many physicists have found that there is enough matter in the universe locking us into a sphere that after the “Big Bang” has pushed out ward but due to the right amount of matter will one day “snap” back in what is called the “Big Crunch”. I found this part of rune lore interesting because these tales were told in BC times and today scientists are finding the facts that go with the myth. This shows that the Norsemen had an intuitive knowledge of the things of science.
Tiwaz is spiritual discipline and faith according to divine law. Tiwaz embodies religious instinct of the individual and society. Tiwaz is also a rune of social integration and regulation. It is also the rune of loyalty. With in the rune lore of this rune and all the others is other magical workings so it is always good to look at the lore as well as the list of magical workings.
